Mari and John Montague paused in Salt Lake City on Labor Day weekend. They were en route from Berkeley, where they married August 21, to Washington, D.C., where they will start work as attorneys. Mari will be an associate with Hogan & Hartson, which has 1100 lawyers in 27 offices around the world. John has been hired at Hogan & Hartson, as well, but he will first serve a two-year internship at the U.S. Tax Court. Before arriving in SLC, Mari and John hiked in the national parks of the Southwest--Grand Canyon, Zions, Bryce. My brother Kent, Mari's dad, spent Labor Day with us, as well.

We invited Scott and Tara Calder, Mari's cousins, to join us for Sunday supper, and then, on Monday, we toured Temple Square and This is the Place Monument. Mari and John spent the afternoon riding the tram to the top of Hidden Peak at Snowbird, and we then stopped by Saltaire, together, to see sunset over the Great Salt Lake.

We watched a dog playing in the shallow water until all we could see was his silhouette against the shining lake and pale pink sky.
