AA--Mountain Safari on the Musandam Peninsula (1.22.26)

We knew Oman was open for tourists as we posed behind this huge "I Love Oman" sign at a lookout point in the Musandam mountains.  Kitschy, yes.  Irresistible, also yes.  We spent January 22, 2026 touring in a four-wheel drive SUV high into the austere, gray mountains on the Musandam Peninsula. The highest peak, Jabal Al Harim, rises 6,864 feet out of the sea.

The Omani military keeps watch over the Strait of Hormuz from this military base atop the mountains.
We searched the rocks for petroglyphs.
Our local guide spilled water on the rocks, so we could see the trilobytes better.

Goats hovered close to us in the parking lot, as we stopped to hunt for petroglyphs.  I offered one goat a banana peel, and he gobbled it as if it were candy!

The mountains were dry as dust, but we found an oasis or two in the midst of them.  As usual, date palms grew wherever there was water, but also veggies like green onions, eggplant, and tomatoes--staples of Middle Eastern cooking.

Donkeys and goats were the main farm animals.
