More Gros Morne

We drove from St. Anthony down the Viking Trail to Gros Morne just after dawn. We loved watching the way the light glinted off the water of the bay.
As we drove south, we enjoyed the colorful road signs.

Back in Gros Morne, we took the tour most highly recommended by the guideb00ks--a two mile hike to the boat dock...

...and a 2 1/2 hour boat ride up Westernbrook Pond. The "Pond" feels like a fjord, although it doesn't open to the sea. The mountain walls r0se steeply all around...

...waterfalls gushed from the cliffs, and we watched a black bear scurry along a granite ledge high up on the mountain, and then run off into the trees.

Our sister boat looked tiny against the high rock walls.

The boat was packed, the day was windy, and the boat rocked back and forth like a metronome. Gretta dealt with crowds and stress as she usually does--by losing herself in a book. She is on her sixth book so far this trip, and Dave is on his third or fourth. Part of the fun of traveling is to read novels and histories about the places we're visiting.

We finished the evening with a concert by "Anchors Aweigh," which played "traditional" Newfoundland music, i.e. pop tunes with Celtic rhythms and beat. We listened for the recurring themes--the sea, surviving hard times, love of homeland, yet trying to decide whether to leave Newfoundland or stay (the population has remained at 500,000 for generations, as the exodus continues).
