Fall Choices

Mid-September is full of happy choices in Salt Lake City.  How best to use a Saturday?  The Greek Festival?  The Fair?  The Farmer's Market?  The cabin?  Oktoberfest?  Our Snowbird condo week began today, September 12, 2015, but Dave had a class reunion in Heber Valley this evening.  We decided to spend the morning at the Farmer's Market in SLC and the afternoon enjoying fall at Mirror Lake before attending Dave's nearby reunion.  As we wandered through the Farmer's Market, Michael called us on his cell phone to tell us about a bookbinder he had found at the Market.  I answered my phone and looked up to see Mike and Heidi standing in front of us!  They love the Market as much as we do.
After years of choosing "dogs of the day" with my Flindt grandchildren, I can't resist charming dogs even when the Flindts aren't with me!
We visited Loriano Tolaini's shop at the Market.  He is an Italian craftsman, now living in Bountiful, who restores 19th Century Bibles.  I plan to take my heirloom Calder Bible to him.
Mirror Lake holds so many memories!  I love the photographs of my dad playing in the water with friends during the 1930s.  Dave and I have also walked round and round and round the lake with children and grandchildren throughout our whole lives.  We took another 1 1/2 mile stroll around Mirror Lake today, enjoying the clear, cold water, the rocky slopes of Mt. Baldy behind the lake, and the bright red kayaks on the water contrasting with the deep green trees and blue water and sky.

On our way down the canyon to Kamas, we stopped at the Samak Country Store, a real find.  The nearby smokehouse makes award-winning jerky and smoked trout.  It also had a pile of local maps and ads, including an advertisement of a bar in Heber that has great country music.  We saved the country music for another time, but bought a packet of beef jerky to eat in the car.
