We flew home from Austin at 2 p.m. on April 23, 2017, but we were still able to fit two Austin landmarks into our morning. First stop was the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center. It had displays of Texas flowers and plants, a cafe with wildflowers decorating the tables, and walking trails furnished with swings.
Throughout her long public life, Lady Bird made preservation of wildflowers and beautification of highways her special projects.
I ordered a pimiento cheese sandwich, a Southern specialty, for brunch. The cafe table was decorated with wildflowers.
The Center museum had live samples of the wildflowers which were in bloom outside.
Texas has many varieties of oak trees. They are natural icons of the Texas countryside.
And, of course, we had to stop to ogle a piece of John Deere construction equipment.
We spent just an hour at the LBJ museum, but the wealth of information at the museum made Dave and me fight over the Doris Kearns biography of LBJ which we bought.
LBJ was renowned as a political operative who excelled at pushing legislation through Congress, as a Representative, Senate Majority Leader, and then President. His slogan was "The Great Society" and he created and helped enact many of the laws that define modern life, such as the Civil Rights Act, Voting Rights Act, Medicare, Clean Air Act, and Wild and Scenic Rivers Act.
