Dave and I agree that the best way to ease into Utah's fall and winter is to spend a week at Snowbird. We have a condo time share at the Iron Blosam Lodge the second week in September. We begin the week dreading the end of summer, and we end the week excited for cool weather to begin.
We arrived at Snowbird on Friday, September 7, 2018, and stayed until Saturday, September 15. We appreciated the canyon's mountains in all their different shades--golden at sunset as we ate dinner at Snowbird's four restaurants, frosty blue-green as we wound down to work early each morning, gray and blue as we rode the tram past granite cliffs to the huge, blue vistas of Hidden Peak.
Our favorite restaurants are the Lodge Bistro, in the hotel next to Iron Blosam, and the Aerie, at the top of the Cliff Lodge. Mike and Heidi joined us for dinner at the Aerie on September 14, and then spent the night.
A favorite tradition is to cook a Sunday dinner of German food for family members. It's Oktoberfest at Snowbird and we want to join in. This year I made rouladen and spaetzle, with apple strudel for dessert. We reminisce about how much fun we have had at Snowbird throughout the years, ever since Jonny and Michael were little boys leaping into the outside pool over and over and over.
Another tradition is taking the tram to the top of Hidden Peak.
We paused to listen to the Alpenhorns.
We then ate sauerbraten and schnitzel on the top floor of the day lodge, looking far down over the craggy cliffs that provide superb skiing in winter.
We walked through the tunnel which moves skiiers from one valley to another in the winter, and which includes artifacts from Little Cottonwood's days as a mining area.
Dave's tolerance level for polka music is limited, but I try to expand those limits each year in the big white tent at which one polka band after another performs.
And, at the end of the week, everyone packs up and leaves.
