Seattle Thanksgiving III--San Juan Island

San Juan Island--close enough to Seattle for a day trip, but far enough away to feel remote and exotic.  On Saturday, November 23, 2013, Michael, David and I joined Lisa and her children for a ferry trip to the island.  We first drove two hours north from Sammamish to Anacortes, where we waited in soft Washington mist for our ferry.

It was an hour ride to Friday Harbor, our port on San Juan Island.  The ferry made its way around and about dozens of small islands between the mainland and our destination.

The harbor was filled with yachts and sailboats.  San Juan Island is a favorite destination for boats birthed in Seattle or along the West Coast.
We drove halfway around the island to the Lime Kiln, with its short trail to a beautiful beach and lighthouse, with many cedars.  The children enjoyed playing on the tree branches.

We drove on to Roche Harbor, with its B&Bs, cafes, and yachts.

We took turns pointing the yachts we'd choose if we ever had the money to buy one.
The 2 p.m. ferry, which we'd planned to take back to Seattle, was full.  We whiled away time until the 4 p.m. ferry left at Cask and Schooner, a picturesque café by the dock.  It was named after a huge model sailing boat in its lobby.

We ordered sandwiches and the house specialty, sticky toffee pudding, for dessert.

We had time for shopping at the many antique stores.  Grant tried on ladies' hats and David found a Lladro sculpture at a bargain price.

We read and snoozed on the ferry ride home.  We left the Flindts and Michael at Lisa's home in Sammamish.  Michael's plane didn't leave until Sunday night.  Dave and I kept driving east, over the two big mountain passes, into Baker, Oregon, to beat a winter storm.  We arrived at 2 a.m. and finished our drive back to SLC the next day.
