Joy in Freezing

Our family includes winter lovers and winter haters.  Michael lives for the winter, so he can go snowboarding at Snowbird.  Camille and the Eberts own season ski passes, the better to slide around in the snow.  Snow is an anomaly and conversation item to the Flindts, something to enjoy during their Christmas forays to Utah and then to leave gladly, as they retreat to the winter rain of Seattle. Sam, from Miami, says that he likes sand better than snow!
On December 27, 2017, we rode the snowmobiles to the cabin.  Gretta is most appreciative that the snowmobiles have been rescued right out of the devil's lair (the ATV/Snowmobile store in Kamas where Dave deposited them for sale) and are now safely housed at Camille's house.  One of the highlights of the day's play was watching Steve gun the snowmobiles up the ramp into their trailer, "like one of those motorcycle riders at the rodeo," as an impressed Flindt noted.

As Gretta and Lisa served chili, cocoa, orange brownies, and fruit at the cabin (lugged through the snow by Steve and Jonny in bins tied onto the sled), other family members dashed around the mountain and through the field on the snowmobiles.

Camille brought the marshmallows, graham crackers, and chocolate for s'mores, and the family competed to see who could roast a marshmallow to the most golden brown, almost-oozing point of perfection.
Some family members were not interested in the competition.
Sam showed his new skill at "borrowing" in subtraction problems.  He also read 400 pages of Curious George stories one night--quite the wunderkind!

 Aha!  The winning entry!

By 4 p.m., the sun was beginning to set, and the family traipsed back to the parking lot on the snowmobiles. Lisa, who had dutifully cooked and mothered all afternoon at the cabin, finally got a chance to zip around the mountain on a magic machine.
