Search for the Lincoln Highway (4.11.26)

David loves the desert.  He grew up catching horny toads in Dugway, somewhere west of Salt Lake City.  Long vistas and lots of sagebrush are heaven to him.  On April 11, 2026, we drove the classic "desert trip" through Utah's West Desert along which Dave's parents used to take people on tours

The skies and mountains were blue and the road straight and dusty all day.

Much of the road followed the old Pony Express route.  We passed the Simpson Springs and Boyd Station Pony Express stations.

We saw horses grazing, and many miles of beautiful views.  

We drove through a thunderstorm that made the desert look even more dramatic.

We passed Fish Springs, which is on the national flyway.  Huge herds of birds rest in Fish Springs during the spring and fall, before continuing on their way.

We visited the ruins of Gold Hill, once a prosperous gold mining town.

Finally, we reached Callao, the ranch town where Dave's dad's friend, Dave Bagley, used to live.

Part of its charm was the old pioneer cabins and monuments.

And, finally, a sign confirming that we had been following the old Lincoln Highway, which was the first federal attempt at creating a road system from the East Coast to the Pacific.
