The Fastest Thing Alive

One of my favorite stories about our oldest grandson, Michael K. Flindt, was when he was about 8 and wore a cheetah suit for Halloween. I asked Michael why he chose to be a cheetah and he said, "Because we're both the fastest thing alive." This weekend Michael proved he was, indeed, one of the fastest things alive. Michael was the only boy from his Sammamish, Washington high school, Eastlake, to qualify for the Washington state finals races in cross-country. The finals are held in Pasco one of the Tri-Cities along the Columbia River near the eastern border with Oregon.

Lisa was also there with Grant, Kirsten, Bryce, and Alyssa. Only Kyle and Spencer had to stay home in Seattle to work. The kids checked Michael's picture in the race program.

Michael's entire cross country team came to Pasco to train with Michael and cheer for him.

Each team had its own tent for the teammates to gather and rest in.

I, of course, take a magazine to even the most exciting events. You never know when you'll be standing in line with a bunch of strangers (or waiting for your husband to use the restroom).

Only one girl qualified from Eastlake for the state finals (the girl in white in the center). We watched her race, running from viewpoint to viewpoint to cheer her on, all along the golf course which had been converted to a racetrack.

Finally, mid-afternoon, it was time for the men from the largest high schools, including Eastlake, to race.

Grant took my camera and captured shots of Michael throughout the race.

We were honored to share such an exciting race with Michael, who is a talented and dedicated runner. After the race, Michael went to dinner with his team and the rest of us tried a highly rated Korean restaurant Lisa had located on the internet. The kids used chopsticks. They sipped miso soup, which is made with seaweed, and ate kimchee, made of fermented cabbage, without complaint. Their favorites, of course, were the noodles.

For dessert, we had ice cream in waffle cones at a local ice cream shop.
