Iowa for Thanksgiving IV: Chicago and Home

The lion at the Chicago Art Institute gets "dressed" for Christmas with a wreath around his neck.  We spent Saturday, November 29, 2019 in Chicago.  The city was decked out for Christmas, with holiday displays in store windows, an outdoor Christmas market, and very frosty temperatures.
First stop at the Art Institute was the Children's Learning Center.  Thomas played with blocks while the rest of us used the computers to design individualized tours of the museum, based on themes such as "Food" or "Overnight at the Museum."

Our tours led us to some unconventional art, such as this pre-Columbian dog.
Another stop was the African gallery.
The boys loved this statue of a samurai warrior.

We stopped for lunch at Small Cheval, with the best burgers anywhere.
We walked through Chicago's downtown, with its theaters and gorgeous skyscrapers.  One of Dave's and my favorite activities, when we've visited Chicago in the past, has been to take walking tours of Chicago's buildings.  One was about "modern skyscrapers," another "the first skyscrapers," and another, my favorite: "Art Deco."
We visited Chicago's outdoor Christmas market.
We also wandered through the tunnels beneath Chicago's skyscrapers to visit a display on Chicago architecture.
We walked back to the car through Macy's.  Today's Macey's is the original Marshall Fields department store, with a beautiful tiled, vaulted ceiling with open atrium.  The store was filled with shoppers and bright with holiday decorations and gifts.
On Sunday morning, we watched Sam read a very long scripture in Primary, and Jonny teach a Primary class (very creatively and ably).
Jonny shared with us his best pictures of the adorable boys.

And then it was time to go home.  On Monday, November 30, 2019, Dave and I drove back to Des Moines for the flight to Salt Lake City.  The parting from Jonny and Jenny's family was not as sad as usual because we knew we would see them in just a few weeks, for Christmas.
