Bear Lake, on the border of Utah and Idaho, is a favorite place for Dave and me. Dave spent summer days waterskiing there with his high school girlfriend, Diane Smith. When the two of us visited the Sea of Galilee, in Israel, we were struck by how much it looked like Bear Lake! Dave and I once spent a week in a condo on the shores of Bear Lake, and we have slurped the raspberry shakes from surrounding towns. When we heard that there was an open house for the new Montpelier Temple, which is near Bear Lake, we were all in.
We took a scenic circle tour, on September 19, 2026, through the fertile farmland of Cache Valley, and then within rugged canyons to Montpelier. We came home along the shore of Bear Lake.
Montpelier has a beautiful, pioneer era tabernacle where we waited our turn to visit the temple.
The temple is decorated in shades of turquoise blue and green, reflecting the colors of neighboring Bear Lake.
Murals of the mountains and lake surrounded the endowment rooms.
Outside the temple, fall flowers bloomed.
As we left Montpelier, we passed through farm country with picturesque barns.
Soon we arrived at a viewpoint above Bear Lake, from which we could see fall leaves, the blue lake, and mountains beyond.
