We met a couple with amazing ties to our family. Jay Franklin is a patent lawyer in Concord, New Hampshire. He is on the high council for the LDS stake that includes Laconia, and he was a speaker at Sacrament Meeting the day we visited. His wife, Lisa, was a friend of our daughter, Lisa, at East High School. "She was always so good, such an example of goodness, and so smart," Lisa Franklin said of our Lisa. Our Lisa confirmed that she and Lisa (Call) Franklin had many classes together and were sometimes even mistaken for each other! Lisa's parents were the Brandon Calls, who were in my brother Scott Calder's ward in Salt Lake City. Jay Franklin remembered visiting Lisa and going to church when Scott was bishop.

Hydrangeas were in bloom all over New England. The bushes were huge, lush, and covered with pink blooms. My hydrangeas were embarrassingly puny by comparison!
As we began driving north, the mountains and colored leaves got more and more beautiful.
We stopped at Lincoln, on the west end of the Kancamagus Highway, for both an ice cream cone and a still-warm apple cider donut. Heaven!

We wished we had time to rent rail bikes, which pedaled along an old train bed.
We paused at a campground along the highway, where the colors of the leaves were even more brilliant in the rain.
We paused again at an overlook near the top of Kancamagus Pass, where the brilliantly colored trees stretched for miles and miles.
We took a short hike to a creek, swirling ever so beautifully over boulders and among brightly colored trees.
