View from the Top (8.30.26)

Dave has lost 40 pounds in the last six months.  He still sighs at being unable to reach the top of Mt. Timpanogas, last time he tried to climb it.  Dave wonders if, now that he has less weight to drag with him, he can go running and mountain climbing again.  In late August, Dave tested his limits by climbing one of the steep hills behind our home.  He took his iPhone with him, and captured the beautiful views from the top of the Avenues across Salt Lake City, as well as down into our backyard!
We get so used to the views all around us that we sometimes forget how beautiful they really are.  This shot is taken from the top of the Avenues, looking west and showing the city in the distance, with the Ocher Mountains and the Great Salt Lake beyond.

This shot looks east, towards Little and Big Cottonwood Canyons in the distance, where the ski resorts are located.  In the foreground is "the gully," a canyon where our children built forts and mountain bikers jumped over moguls.  The University of Utah is just out of the picture on the far left.
This photo looks down on Sugar Loaf, the hill behind our house that, blessedly, is protected from construction.  It is a great place to watch fireworks across the city or to sleigh ride off the top in the winter.  Our guests sometimes take a hike to the top as an after-dinner treat.

From Sugar Loaf, you can look into our backyard (second from left on back row).  We don't notice the power lines that show up so prominently in this photo.  We do occasionally have the power company stop by to make sure our trees aren't so high as to interfere with those lines.
