There were lots of fun things to do in and around St. George on the Labor Day 2017 weekend. Michael's parents-in-law, Gay and Bevan Bastian, were guests at our St. George home, with their family. Michael's wife, Heidi, planned a family reunion for the Bastians of hikes, games, and singing and dancing. Our three days at the Shakespeare Festival overlapped the reunion by a day, so we got a bit of time with the Bastians, eating a French toast breakfast and listening to Gay sing Broadway show tunes, accompanied by Heidi.
We gorged on theater over Labor Day weekend, seeing six of the nine plays at the Utah Shakespeare Festival.
In "Midsummer Night's Dream", we especially enjoyed the "play within a play," which reminded us of the time Michael played Pyramus (or was it Thisbe?) in the Lowell Elementary School presentation of "Midsummer Night's Dream". Alas, we missed "Romeo and Juliet", which would have reminded us of the time Jonny played Romeo.
I had never seen Shakespeare's "As You Like It", and I was delighted to meet Rosalind, one of Shakespeare's strongest and wittiest heroines.
"Guys and Dolls" was a charming musical, with beautiful singing and a half-believable love story.
"Treasure Island" was a rollicking pirate tale, with some tongue-in-cheek humor. It was especially interesting to Dave and me because it was written by Robert Louis Stevenson, one of the great Scottish authors about whom we had learned on our recent trip to Scotland.
"William Shakespeare's Long Lost First Play" was a fun spoof of all Shakespeare's plots and characters. My favorite scene was a supposed meeting of Hamlet and Lady MacBeth, in which Lady MacBeth couldn't understand why Hamlet was so hesitant to do a bloody deed!
Another favorite Cedar City restaurant is Centro Wood-Fired Pizza. Its pizza special was butternut squash with goat cheese.
