Greece Trip: the Acropolis (4.22.24)

The Acropolis is an iconic site, like the Taj Mahal or Eiffel Tower.  It  a hill overlooking the city on which a number of classical Greek temples have been built.

There were hordes of people at the Acropolis the day we visited.  

All of us were taking selfie, "we were there" shots, which added to the delays and commotion.

Still, the temples on the Acropolis are beautifully proportioned and constructed.  And, of course, they form the foundation of Western architecture.  The columns show up on many of America's most prominent buildings, including state capitol buildings.  Even the home down the street from us has white columns, to show that it is of classical importance!

Some of the temples had statues.  One of the great controversies involves Greece retrieving the "Elgin Marbles" from Britain.  Lord Elgin, a British diplomat in Greece, pried the statues off the buildings on the Acropolis and took them back to England in the early 1800s.

The views from the Acropolis over the city of Athens were stunning.

And, of course, the souvenir shops near the Acropolis were filled with copies of Greek artifacts in all sizes and qualities.
