Greece Trip: Mt. Olympus (4.19.24)

Zeus, king of the Greek gods, lived on Mt. Olympus.  He was the god of thunder and lightning, which electrified the skies around Mt. Olympus.  On April 19, 2024, we visited Mt. Olympus.
 

Mt. Olympus is close to the Greek coast.  As we drove up the mountain, there were beautiful views towards the sea.

Despite the drama of Zeus and his thunderbolts, Mt. Olympus was actually a low-key, quiet place when we visited.  Our hotel was in the town of Litochoro, on the slopes of the mountain.

We drove up the mountain, on a narrow, winding road.  We passed through small villages and stopped at an abandoned church, with stone walls and a painting of a saint of priest still hanging on an outside wall.

We found a small "taverna" for dinner. 

I have a special interest in the Greek Mt. Olympus, since I grew up in the shadow of Salt Lake City's Mt. Olympus.  I also went to Olympus High School, whose mascot is the Titans.  Titans were half-man, half God, from Greek mythology.  Just as Greek pillars and Roman domes have made their way onto state capitol buildings across America, Greek mythology has influenced the name of a mountain in Salt Lake City and the high school that sits beneath it!
