Dave and I love our cabin near Oakley, Utah. It cost $10,000 in 1972, when Dave's parents bought it, so it is nothing fancy. However, we love the drive into the Uintah Mountains to get there, and we love the mountain smells and peace and all the memories. On May 17, 2025, we spent a night at the cabin.
The adventure of the trip was to see a moose grazing 50 feet from the cabin. I look a good look and some pictures and then carefully made my way inside. Dave's parents hung a photo on the cabin wall of the black bear that visited one night. Another time I saw a moose (elk?) right next to the back porch. He was huge--much bigger than a horse.
Years ago, Dave's dad planted daffodils around the cabin and they still come up every spring. Dave's dad also cultivated grass in the "back yard" behind the back porch. That was too much "imported civilization" for us, and we let the grass go. Dave still runs a lawn mower over that "back yard," though. Deer and squirrels and an occasional fox visit us at our Salt Lake home, but moose and bears are a quantum leap more exciting!
One of the treats of our cabin visit was riding the four-wheelers around the large Pine Mountain development. There are 300 cabins in Pine Mountain, and paved trails going high up the mountain, with a view for miles and miles. Dave's challenge is to keep the four-wheelers running from year to year, without taking them into Kamas for a $500 servicing.
A weekend at the cabin is now even more appealing, with the Oakley Diner under new management. The diner is now twice as big as it was pre-Covid, with a good chef and menu. Dave and I usually stop by for a meal whenever we visit the cabin.
The Oakley Diner owners also opened a bakery underneath the diner, with a fine selection of croissants and other pastries.
This weekend, we stopped by the Oakley Bakery for breakfast.
