John and Carol: Goblin Valley, Capitol Reef, and Bryce (5.25 to 27.25)

John Robinson and his partner, Carol Edwards, love the red rock country of Utah, as we do.  Over Memorial Day weekend, from May 25, 2025 through May 27, 2025, we looped south through the red rock of Central Utah, including Goblin Valley, Capitol Reef, and Bryce National Park.
The hoodoos of Goblin Valley fascinate children, but also adults.  As we drove through that weird wonderland, I remembered the trip we took to Goblin Valley with Dave's parents and their whole family many years ago.  Our children ran wild with their cousins.
We hiked into the Little Wildhorse slot canyon, until the trail got rough and narrow.

In Capitol Reef, we both hiked the Grand Wash and followed boardwalks along the canyon wall, looking for Native American petroglyphs.

Some of the best views of the trip were from the top of Boulder Mountain, as we headed south from Capitol Reef National Park.
We paused at the Anasazi State Park in Boulder to see ancient Native American ruins.  Anasazi State Park is most notable, to me, for its excellent gift shop with beautiful, authentic Native American jewelry. The park director says she has a staffer responsible solely for the gift shop, including meeting with the traders from the reservations who stop buy with silver and turquoise jewelry to sell. I bought a turquoise and coral necklace to remember our trip.
Boulder is also known for the Hell's Backbone Grill.  We paused for a late lunch. Hell's Backbone is a narrow stretch of road near Boulder which has sharp dropoffs on either side of the road.

Our final stop, before heading back north, was Bryce National Park.

Before dropping John and Carol off at the airport, we were already planning a trip next year to Moab, the Four Corners, and Mesa Verde.
