Utah's Finest

Gayle Miller, one of Utah's richest businesspeople and most generous philanthropists, spoke at our ward's Relief Society Birthday Party on March 8, 2022.  Gayle and her former husband, Larry, used to live in our ward.  For many years, they owned the Utah JAZZ, as well as strings of car dealerships and movie theaters.  Gayle talked, after dinner, about her work with the homeless in Salt Lake City, as well as her other charitable interests.

There's a world of difference between the way our ward cultural hall looks, in pictures, and the way it feels when you are there at an event.  In person, it is cozy and attractive.  In photos, it is supremely ugly, with basketball hoops at each end and basketball markings on the floor.
I enjoyed spending an hour or two with old and new friends.
Flowers and an embroidered tablecloth were an attempt to add elegance!
Nona Frisbey is a dear, old friend.  She always asks about Lisa, whom she taught in Primary or Young Women.
Stormy Skidmore is another old friend.  We were nursery leaders together when Mike and Jonny were babies.

As I listened to Gayle speak, I thought back, many years, to when she and her husband, Larry Miller, invited Dave and me to attend a JAZZ game with them.  We had front row seats!

After Gayle's husband, Larry, died, Gayle married Kim Wilson, another member of our ward and good friend of Dave and mine.  Kim announced his and Gayle's engagement by saying, "We've decided to merge our food storage."  Kim and Gayle share an interest in Church history.  He helps to obtain and reconstruct Church historical sites, such as Kirtland, Ohio, and Haun's Mill, Missouri.  She finances the collection of the Joseph Smith Papers, a comprehensive assembly of all the letters, and other documents relating to Joseph Smith's life.

Gayle's latest philanthropic endeavor is a matching fund to help Ukrainian refugees.  The fund gives cash to refugees, upon their arrival in Poland or other countries bordering Ukraine.  "Cash is what they need the most, for food or rent," Gayle said.
