One of the perks of being the bishop's wife was that I got to tag along on the ward Young Men & Young Women float trip down the Colorado River on July 31, 2021. Dave had spent months planning this special outing for the teenagers in our ward. Because of Covid restrictions, Dave invited the teenagers' families, as well, so they could drive their children to Moab, Utah, where our rafting trip began.
We met at the rafting company in Moab and then rode by bus ten miles up the river to our "pur-in" point.
At the put-in point, we were issued life jackets and divided into groups of ten on each raft. The teenagers gathered together, and the moms and dads, with the younger children, also clustered together. Our raft included Phil Wilson, a psychiatrist who is a special friend of Dave's, his wife Alicia, and their little daughter, Cookie. It also included Daniel and Dalynn Thomas and their little daughter, Dagney.
Once we got into the boats, each of which had a guide, Dave's job of herding people was done. He relaxed.
Cookie Wilson was a fun boat-mate. She crawled in and out of the boat several times for a swim.
We paused for a group photo.
There had been a big storm a few days before, so the river was full of red sand run-off. I crawled off the raft for a swim, and it turned my white t-shirt red.
Each raft was issued a "duckie" or two--two-person kayaks. Danel Thoma and Dagney preferred the duckie to the raft.
