Rose Bowl 1: On the Road

I didn't realize that attending the Rose Bowl would be a Spendlove family tribal migration!  The game was scheduled for January 2, 2023.  At first, Jonny asked Dave to help Jonny chaperone Sam and Henry to the game.  Dave invited me; we both invited Mike; Jonny included Jenny, Thomas, and Jay; Jenny invited her parents; and then we learned that Steve had bought nine tickets and was taking the whole Ebert family!  If the Flindts didn't have to get back to Seattle and Houston, we might have recruited even more family members!  As it turned out, Jonny's family and Camille's family traveled to California separately from us.  One very fun part of the trip was driving with Mike back and forth to the Pacific Coast.
Mike always has his eye out for cute toys for Audrey and Calder.  We stopped at The Creamery in Beaver, Utah, for ice cream on the way to California, and for lunch on the way home.  Mike bought the giant stuffed dog that I am holding in the top photo of this post.

We drove through the Virgin River Gorge on our way south, from Utah into Nevada.  We get so used to all the spectacular places in Utah and its easy to overlook this huge, deep, ruggedly beautiful spot.
It was early when we left SLC on December 30, 2023.  We stopped in Las Vegas for a late lunch. Michael, who knows how to travel and how to eat, looked up a gourmet sandwich shop in a Las Vegas strip mall, "Cured & Whey."  I had a wonderful Cubano.  Inside the refrigerator case were different flavors of truffle butter and sausages.
We began to hit heavy traffic outside of Barstow, California, two hours (in regular traffic) from our hotel in Irvine.  "This is why I don't like visiting California," David sighed.  We figured that the traffic along I-15 added at least three or four hours to our trip.
