On Saturday, January 7, 2023, in the midst of Annie's homecoming parties, Dave and I took Janie Rogers to see the Maynard Dixon exhibition at the BYU Art Museum. Janie has a degree in art history and an excellent collection of Utah art. Dave is her minister and we are good friends.
Maynard Dixon is known for his landscapes of the Southwest. He lived for many years in Mt. Carmel, just the other side of Zions Park, and he was also married, for a decade or more, to Dorothea Lang, the famous photographer of the Depression. One of the books at our St. George house contains a photo essay Lang created of "Three Mormon Towns." BYU has one of the largest collections of Dixon's paintings in the United States, and it was a treat to study them.
Dixon was also a "social realist" painter who depicted the personal tragedies of the Depression.
We also enjoyed another exhibition, at the BYU Art Museum, of depictions of Christ from different historical eras.Jana Emmer, whose parents are our friends, Paul and Julie Emmer, is now the director of BYU's Art Museum. What an honor to head such an impressive institution! Before returning to SLC, we had lunch at Magleby's Fresh, my favorite cafe in Provo. The salads were delicious, as were its pies and cakes!
