It was impossible to decide which Norwegian fjord was most gorgeous during this cruise, but a strong contender was the fjord leading from Bergen, the second largest city in Norway, to Mostraumen. We took that trip on June 3, 2023.
We started the day with a visit to the Bergen fish market. Chefs at the open air market prepared huge pans of paella, featuring the fish of the day.
Dried fish hung in ribbons, next to sausages from various animals, such as elk and reindeer.
The fresh shrimp, lobster, and mussels were resistible only because Dave and I had reserved a special seafood feast on board the Statendam.
We did cave in to carrying home a few reindeer sausages, to celebrate our Viking heritage.
There were all sorts of boats in the harbor, from sightseeing craft to sailboats to yachts to ships with serious work to do. Unlike most other villages and small cities we visited on this cruise, Bergen is a bustling port.
We sailed down the fjord, past high cliffs and waterfalls. At the end of the fjord, at Mostraumen, the water was so glassy clear that my photos caught perfect reflections not once, but dozens of times.
Finally, sated with beauty, we sailed back to Bergen.
It was a beautiful, sunny day in Bergen when we returned. The flowers were out, and the parks were filled with people relaxing in the warmth.
Large buildings in the distance carried on the business of the city--shipping fish and other products around the country and world.
We visited the Edvard Munch exhibit at the Bergen art museum. Munch is the best-known Norwegian artist, noted for his disturbing "The Scream." That painting was not in the Bergen collection, but other disturbing paintings were.
