I've been on a Norwegian cruise before! As I searched through my dad's old photos, I found this picture of him traveling through the fjords on a boat. I've included other Calder family photos in my other fjord blogs.
Hardangerfjord is the second longest fjord in Norway and the fifth longest in the world. We sailed from the sea down Hardangerfjord in May 30, 2023. We then sailed all the way down one of its branches to Eidefjord. When we docked, we were 80 kilometers from the sea, at the edge of the Hardanger Plateau and Hardanger National Park.
Hardangerfjord is south of Bergen, circled in blue on the map above.
Norwegian cities are crisp and clean.
We drove to a Nature Center in Hardanger National Park before climbing the escarpment to the Hardanger Plateau.
The mountains rose sharply around us.
In the Nature Center, we learned about the animals living on the plateau above Hardangerfjord, the plants they ate, and the people who chased them.
On the plateau, high above the fjord, we stopped at Fossli Hotel to eat a snack and play on the piano that Edvard Grieg used to compose his piano masterpieces when he vacationed here.
The view out the cafe window was spectacular.
Edvard Grieg's piano.
We walked to the overlook of Vorringfosse, one of the longest and largest waterfalls in Norway.
The waterfall crashed down the mountainside into the canyon below.
We then drove even higher, to the Sysehvatn Glacier. The natural sights in Norway were virtually empty this early in the year and were utterly gogeous.
There was a whole wall of different brands of rye flatbread, an obvious favorite in Scandinavia!
Soon we were heading back to sea again.
