Fjord Trip VI: Molde and the Spiral Highway (5/31/23)

I'm not sure which fjords the Calders visited in the late 1950s, but I do remember our ship listing from side to side near the North Cape.  Maybe this was Molde!

It was a cold, windy, rainy day when we visited Molde, Norway, on May 31, 2023.  Molde has been a port city since the 1500s.  It was destroyed by fire in 1916, bombed by the Germans in 1940, was completely rebuilt, and is now a squeaky clean Scandinavian city of some 35,000.

We took an all-day bus tour to see The Atlantic Road, a twisted stretch of highway that extends over a series of Norwegian islands along the Atlantic coast.  Our first stop was at the top of the cliff overlooking Molde.  We could see our cruise ship far below.

We spent the day driving through the Norwegian countryside and along the coast.  We saw many houses painted red and other bright colors in fishing villages and, inland, we saw traditional Norwegian homes with sod on their roofs.

The highlight of the trip was the twisty road that formed a bridge over a series of islands.  It looked better on a sunny day in this Google photo than it did when we shivered across it in the fog (below).

Molde is known as the "City of Roses" because of its beautiful gardens.  We wandered around town after our bus tour, enjoying the statues and fountains.  The girl in this statue carries a basket of roses.

It felt good to get back to the ship and warm up.
