Fjord Trip VIII: Flam (6/2/23)

This looks like the Flam railroad!  Maybe!

A trip on the Flam railroad, up an impossibly steep mountain, is one of the iconic adventures of the Norwegian fjords.  We took that trip on June 2, 2023.  Flam is at the end of a fjord that cuts deeply inland.

Flam is a small town, with cliffs rising steeply above it.

The Flam railroad crawls all the way from the sea to a high mountain plateau, through meadows, small villages, and tunnels.  At times, our train passed through granite canyons, with the canyon walls just a couple of feet from our windows.

The first stop on the railroad from Flam was Kiosfossen, site of a huge waterfall.

According to folklore, a woman in a red dress appeared to men looking at the falls, sang to them, and lured them to their deaths.  While we waited at the falls, with our fellow passengers, a woman in a red dress appeared in the distance and sang and danced for us.  We resisted her charms.

The final destination of the railroad was Voss, a resort town on a lake--skiing in the winter and boating in the summer.  We ate a Norwegian feast at a local restaurant and then walked around the town.

We lingered by a church built in the 1200s, with its picturesque gravestones.

The road back to our cruise ship in Flam led past another gorgeous waterfall.

We then drove along the fjord that our ship traveled through on its way to Flam, and the river that led into the fjord.
