What a party! It had Chinese lanterns, chicken cordon bleu, jars of candy, cheesecake, a piñata, accordion music, and a Rachmaninoff piano solo! And that was just the beginning...
The Bastians hosted a wedding dinner and program on the afternoon of May 2, 2015, at the Paradise Dance Hall in Fairview Utah, down the road from Manti. The dance hall is a historic building where community dances were held in the early 1900s.
The decorations were gorgeous--Heidi's colors, white and blue, everywhere.
Heidi's mom, Gay, ordered the flowers from Ecuador and she and Heidi's sisters arranged the elegant bouquets themselves.
Heidi's sister, Marissa, played the accordion, including the Wedding March, as Mike and Heidi arrived.
Groups of photos showed Heidi and Mike's whirlwind courtship, including their engagement on a sailboat on San Diego Bay.
Heidi's reception book included all her engagement pictures.
Gay welcomed everyone to dinner with a show tune.
The kids' tables were the fun place to be!
Heidi and Mike presided, like king and queen, at the head table.
The cake was hung with drapes of royal icing.
The Bastians made a papier mache piñata shaped like a globe, with the places Heidi and Mike have visited inscribed on it.
If the chicken cordon bleu and cheesecake dinner wasn't rich and filling enough, jars of candy lined the wall.
The party was a delight for old guys and little guys, and everyone in between. "We made sure there were fun things for children," Gay said.
Sophia couldn't wait to begin dancing.
Mia and Alyssa joined her.
Mike and Heidi had a room full of well wishers, including Uncle Alan Dale.
After dinner, Heidi's dad, Bevan, began the program. He told about how Heidi was named for the Swiss Heidi of storybook fame. Heidi, Bevan says, has the same pluck and independence as the Heidi in the story.
Gretta emphasized how creative Michael is, from photography to writing, music, cooking, and planning unique trips. She told about Michael reading as a one-year-old and his globe-trotting everywhere.
Dave told about Michael the Entrepreneur--how Mike sold fish and rocks as a little boy, screen-printed t-shirts as a teenager, and how he has now amassed enough apartments to make himself independently wealthy.
Mike and Heidi played a Bach duet.
As Bevan read the story of Heidi and Mike's romance, we played a candy bar game, shuffling the bars one direction every time Bevan said "Heidi" and the other direction every time he said "Mike."
Gay has a beautiful voice, and she sang several Broadway love songs.
Jessica put together a video about Mike and Heidi's lives, with pictures of each of them at similar ages. She showed it on the big screen at the dance hall.
Heidi then played a Rachmaninoff solo.
Jonny finished the program with his poem, "Blessing for My Brother." It was as witty and outrageous as Jonny's poems always are, and the audience howled with laughter.
